Family Tree – Brx House Theatre
“Family Tree” by Mojisola Adebayo celebrates the legacy of Henrietta Lacks and her immortal HeLa cells. Lacks, whose story inspired “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” remains a symbol of medical breakthroughs, yet her contribution often goes unnoticed.
The play follows Lacks’ perspective as she observes the impact of her cells throughout history. It also explores the experiences of NHS nurses and enslaved women, shedding light on systemic injustices and exploitation.
While “Family Tree” raises vital ethical questions and resonates with the Black Lives Matter movement, it struggles to weave its narrative threads cohesively. Despite its thematic richness, the play fails to integrate its diverse elements seamlessly.
