Comics Laureate Bobby Joseph Interview
Bobby Joseph –the first Comics Laureate of colour breaks down his passion for comics over a 30 year career and how graphic novels can help children to read.
Bobby Joseph, a comic book author and graphic novelist, is the UK’s new comics laureate. He’s the first person of colour to hold this position. His appointment came during the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in Bowness-on-Windermere, Lake District.
Created in 2014, the role aims to boost comics’ impact on literacy and creativity. It focuses on using comics in schools and libraries.
Joseph, aged 51 and from south London, aims to tackle diversity issues in his two-year tenure. He wants to change stereotypes and amplify unheard voices in comics.
He’s known for creating the first British comic with black characters. Titles include Skank and Black Eye. Joseph also co-created the graphic novel Scotland Yardie.
Since the 90s, Joseph has championed diverse comic artists. He stresses the need for funding and programs to support new voices.
Julie Tait, director of LICAF, welcomes Joseph’s appointment. She sees the role as vital for advancing comics and engaging new audiences.
