NIL Gallery Paris
In January we popped by NIL gallery in Paris. Since 2016, they have been dedicated to promoting the art scenes of the global south. We saw works by Slimen Elkamel and Caleb Prah.
Slimen Elkamel’s artistry is deeply rooted in his Tunisian heritage. Raised in Mazouna, he was immersed in storytelling and poetic expression from an early age. Consequently, his journey as an artist began at the Tunis Institute of Fine Arts.
Elkamel’s creative process revolves around a dedication to the written word. He practices daily, crafting prose that mirrors the richness of his artwork. By blending writing and painting, he creates a seamless fusion of reality and imagination.
In 2022, Elkamel’s solo exhibition at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris propelled him onto the international stage. His art, described by Jack Lang as a homage to Tunisia, captivated audiences with its grandeur and vision.
Transitioning to Caleb Kwarteng Prah, a beacon in Ghanaian artistry, he draws inspiration from urban culture. Utilizing photography and painting, he captures the essence of everyday life with luminous clarity. His compositions seamlessly blend Western techniques with an African narrative.
Moreover, Kwarteng Prah’s art carries a potent political message, reclaiming Africa’s narrative through photography. His work confronts Ghana’s complex history while envisioning a brighter future.
Both Elkamel and Kwarteng Prah illuminate the beauty of their cultural heritages. Their legacies bridge the past and present, leaving a lasting impact on the artistic landscape. Through their art, they invite viewers to engage with shared human experiences and celebrate resilience.
