Doyle Wham introduces Yannis Davy Guibinga’s inaugural UK solo exhibition, highlighting his efforts to redefine African portrayals through narrative-rich imagery. Guibinga’s work, rooted in research, reimagines mythologies from Western and Central Africa, showcased in his latest exhibit “Children of Distant Suns.” Through this, he creates Shira Island, a realm where diverse legends coalesce, demonstrating the global resonance of myths. Guibinga also honors Western African water spirits in new series and explores Christian themes in others, urging reflection on the enduring influence of myths and the need for a contemporary visual language.
