For more than three decades, Yinka Shonibare CBE has engaged with Western art history and literature to examine contemporary culture and national identities. “Suspended States” marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in London in over 20 years.
This exhibition features new works that investigate the influence of power structures on places of refuge, the discourse surrounding public monuments, the ecological consequences of colonialism, and the enduring impact of imperialism on conflict and subsequent peace efforts.
The exhibition presents two significant new installations at Serpentine South. “Sanctuary City” consists of miniature structures that symbolize locations of refuge for marginalized and persecuted communities. “The War Library” is composed of 5,000 books encased in Dutch wax print, representing various conflicts and peace agreements.
Throughout the exhibition, Shonibare’s distinctive use of Dutch wax print reflects the complex relationship between Africa and Europe.
