The Review – literary review by writers of colour

The Jhalak Foundation and WritersMosaic are launching The Review, a biannual 16-page insert in The Bookseller. This publication will be produced by writers from the global majority, both in the UK and abroad. Its presence in The Bookseller ensures visibility within the wider publishing industry. However, its primary goal is to create a space for deep literary discussions that challenge and go beyond the imperial perspective.
Novelist Guy Gunaratne will edit and curate The Review. He will be supported by genre-specific curators: Irenosen Okojie for Fiction, Will Harris for Poetry, Colin Grant for Non-fiction, Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Margaret Sturton for Children and Young Adults, and Sarah Shaffi for Forthcoming Titles.
The first edition will be published in spring 2024 as an insert in The Bookseller. Additional print copies will be available upon request to independent bookshops and community organizations. An online edition will also be published on WritersMosaic.
Gunaratne describes The Review as a platform for rigorous literary critique, celebrating innovative writing, and encouraging spirited debate. He believes it will introduce a fresh and defiant voice to the publishing industry.
Colin Grant, WritersMosaic director, sees the collaboration with the Jhalak Foundation as a chance to commission new reviews from global majority writers in the UK, focusing on their work. He emphasizes the high standards in both review writing and editing.
