Rhinoceros at the Almeida Theatre
★★★★ Observer ★★★★Time Out. Omar Elerian’s Rhinoceros is a wild, hilarious whirlwind—packed with bold satire, playful chaos, and joyful, mind-bending theatrical magic @AlmeidaTheatre Until Apr 26th. Tickets: https://almeida.co.uk/whats-on/rhinoceros/
Rhinoceros by Eugène Ionesco is an absurdist play. It explores conformity, identity, and resistance. The story takes place in a quiet town. Suddenly, people begin turning into rhinoceroses.
Berenger, an ordinary man, watches this bizarre change. Slowly, he realizes he is one of the last humans. Meanwhile, his friends and neighbors accept or even welcome the transformation.
As the pressure to conform grows, Berenger fights to stay human. The play mocks mass movements, especially fascism and authoritarianism. It shows how people trade reason and morals for the comfort of fitting in.
Darkly funny yet deeply disturbing, Rhinoceros asks a powerful question: What does it mean to stay true to yourself when the world changes around you?
