Felix & Spear will present Tam Joseph’s exhibition This Green and Pleasant Land from March 20 to May 17, 2025. The exhibition features powerful new works, including paintings and a sculpture. Joseph’s art explores themes of identity, culture, and social issues. His works encourage viewers to think critically about these topics.
Joseph reflects on his experiences growing up in London, especially his changing views on homelessness. He recalls singing Blake’s poem at school in the 1950s, not fully understanding its meaning. In post-WWII London, Joseph encountered “tramps,” which confused him at first. Over time, the image of the “tramp” faded, replaced by “rough sleepers.” Joseph’s travels also exposed him to homelessness, such as in Old Delhi in 1968.
As he matured, Joseph’s attitude shifted. He noticed how he started to distance himself from homeless people, telling himself “it’s not your problem.” Eventually, he realized this was a form of self-protection, but it went against his nature. For Joseph, recognizing these hidden truths is essential to his work and personal growth.
Joseph’s art often blends humour with sharp political commentary, addressing issues of diaspora, identity, and world history. His works have been displayed at major institutions like Tate Britain and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
