54.60 Africa at Arcola Theatre
54.60 Africa is a vibrant pan-African odyssey blending music, dance, and storytelling, celebrating Africa through adventure, unity, and heritage. At Arcola until July 12, Tickets: https://www.arcolatheatre.com/whats-on/54-60-africa/
54.60 Africa bursts onto the Arcola Theatre stage with energy, music, and a bold mission: to celebrate and reclaim the narrative of Africa. Conceived and directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr, the show follows eleven travellers racing across 54 nations in just seven days, urged on by the maternal spirit of Mama Africa, played with warmth and wisdom by Suzette Llewellyn.
Inspired by Elufowoju’s real-life journey to every African country before turning 60, this production blends personal, political, and cultural histories with myth and music. It’s an ambitious, joy-filled experience packed with exuberant dance, vivid scenes, and live performances from The Ganda Boys.
The cast is a delight. Munashe Chirisa steals scenes with quick wit and physical comedy. Liana Cottrill’s dance captivates. Even when stepping in for an absent actor, Elufowoju commands the stage. Visually, the loose, symbolic set – with a coffin at its centre – hints at the stakes.
The show is a celebration of African identity, resilience, and imagination. It’s lively, unfiltered, and full of heart – a bold tribute to a continent’s spirit.
