Meet Princess, a bold ten-year-old with a dream. She wants to win the Weston-super-Mare Beauty Contest. But her mum is too busy working multiple jobs. Her brother, an eager photographer, won’t take her picture. Then, The Hustler comes back into her life.
It’s 1963 in Bristol. Black British Civil Rights activists fill the streets. Princess soon discovers what it means to be Black and beautiful.
Chinonyerem Odimba’s play, Princess & The Hustler, debuted at the Bristol Old Vic in February 2019. It toured the UK after, in a co-production by Eclipse Theatre Company, Bristol Old Vic, and Hull Truck Theatre. Directed by Dawn Walton, the play was shortlisted for the 2018 Alfred Fagon Best New Play Award.
