Firelei Báez debuted her first UK solo exhibition, Sueño de la Madrugada (A Midnight’s Dream). She created striking paintings, drawings, installations, and sculptures. At South London Gallery, she transformed the space with immersive installations and large abstract paintings. Using bold colors, natural elements, sound, and light, she reflects on colonial histories.
The exhibition leads visitors through vibrant spaces where ecology, power, and resistance meet. Báez researches archives to explore the Afro-Caribbean diaspora’s lasting impact. She sees myths and folklore as tools of cultural and spiritual resistance. Her work tells stories of legendary figures like the Ciguapa, Atabey, Oshun, and Erzili.
These figures challenge viewers to rethink humanity and imagine true freedom. #contemporaryafricanart #contemporaryart #art #blackart #africanart #africanartist #blackjoy #dominican #gallery #london #abstractart #resitance #painting #FireleiBáez @SLG_artupdates
