Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the electric ‘godmother of rock ‘n’ roll’, inspired legends like Elvis and Johnny Cash. Now, her story returns to the spotlight. This bold, intimate show also celebrates her singing partner, Marie Knight. Together, they formed one of music history’s most powerful duos.
It’s 1946 in Mississippi. Rosetta has revolutionised gospel with her joyful, guitar-driven style. Churchgoers disapprove. They reject her for mixing sacred music with nightclub rhythm and blues. Still, she stays bold. She convinces the virtuous Marie Knight to join her. Next, Rosetta must teach Marie to loosen up her sound—to swing a little.
The show bursts with rock and gospel hits like Didn’t It Rain and Peace in the Valley. Live musicians will perform alongside Olivier Award-winner Beverley Knight as Rosetta.
