Brixton Calling
Brixton Calling tells the wild, heartwarming story of how one passionate music lover turned a crumbling cinema into London’s legendary rock’n’roll hotspot — a true love letter to culture. At Southwark Playhouse till Aug 16. Tickets: https://southwarkplayhouse.co.uk/productions/brixton-calling/
The story begins with Simon Parkes as a rebellious teen at Gordonstoun School. He skips classes and dives into London’s gritty music scene. From the start, his love for music is clear.
When he finds the old cinema, it’s love at first sight. He gathers a local crew and brings the venue to life. Soon, it becomes a stage for legends like The Clash, The Smiths, and Blondie. The play, directed by Bronagh Lagan, feels like a live concert. Lights flash. Smoke rises. Music thunders through the space. Max Runham, as Parkes, charms the audience with swagger and heart.
Meanwhile, Tendai Sitima shines in multiple roles, especially as Parkes’ loyal partner Johnny Lawes. Together, they show how the Academy became more than a venue. It became a home for activism, creativity, and change. Anti-apartheid rallies, drag nights, and miners’ strike speeches all happened here.
A joyful celebration of music, people, and place.
