“Why A Black Woman Will Never Be Prime Minister” follows Shanice, a young Black woman, as she begins her first day at university, and John, who launches his political campaign at the same time.
Shanice stands tall as the opposite of John—she represents the people, while he embodies the political establishment. Though they come from the same neighborhood in London, their worlds couldn’t be more different. However, when a unique opportunity brings their lives together, their stark differences, along with surprising similarities, begin to surface. As their paths intertwine, the hypocrisy between public-facing diversity messages and the reality of lived experiences becomes increasingly clear.
Spanning nine months, the story dives deep into themes of intersectionality, British politics, and Black women’s maternal health, using a powerful mix of satire, spoken word, and narrative to explore these complex issues.
