We call it Urapuntja is an exhibition at JGM Gallery showcasing contemporary paintings by six Indigenous artists from Urapuntja, Northern Territory, Australia. These artists belong to the Anmatyerr and Alyawarr language groups. Their work reflects deep cultural connections to Country, Dreamings (Altyerr/Angnekerr), and community.
The exhibition takes inspiration from the legacy of Emily Kam Kngwarray, one of Australia’s most influential contemporary artists. In the 1980s, her bold and expressive work brought global attention to the Urapuntja region, often referred to by settlers as “Utopia.” Today, her influence continues to shape the artists who live and work there.
Many of the featured artists were part of important early projects such as the Utopia Women’s Batik Group and The Summer Project 1988/89. Others assisted as children, mixing paints or watching closely. Their styles have evolved over time. For instance, Josie Kunoth Petyarr has moved from figurative art to striking abstraction.
The show also includes three works by Kudditji Kngwarreye, Emily’s kin-brother, offering contrast through his structured compositions and Emu Dreaming.Together, these works celebrate Urapuntja’s vibrant artistic community. As Director Jennifer Guerrini Maraldi notes, great art grows from shared stories, cultural knowledge, and generations of creative exchange—not in isolation.
