Orí mi pé at Art Gallery of Ontario
Oluseye’s exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario explores Blackness through migration, spirituality, ancestry, and Yoruba rituals, featuring bronze cowrie shells on a divination tray. Until July 5 Visit: https://ago.ca/exhibitions/oluseye-ori-mi-pe
Orí mi pé traces the migrations and manifestations of Blackness, blending ancestral heritage with contemporary expression, and the physical with the spiritual. Inspired by merindinlogun, a Yoruba divination ritual, the installation features 16 large-scale bronze cowrie shells resting on a hand-carved divination tray. In Yoruba culture, cowrie shells symbolize wealth, guidance, and ancestral communication. Through this work, Oluseye honors cultural traditions while weaving in personal narratives, spirituality, and mythology. His interdisciplinary practice reflects Blackness as divine and fluid, unbound by geography or time. This new installation continues Oluseye’s exploration of identity, diaspora, and the powerful legacy of African spirituality. #contemporaryafricanart #exhibition #contemporaryart #art #blackart #africanart #blackjoy #gallery #toronto #whatson #painting #sculpture #nigeria #yoruba #ontario #ago
