Mário Macilau’s Exhibition On Faith
Ed Cross presents On Faith, a solo exhibition by award-winning photographer Mário Macilau (b. 1984, Maputo, Mozambique), coinciding with his display in Tate Modern’s group show A World in Common. The exhibition runs at the Garrett Street gallery from June 15 to August 5, 2023.
Featuring photographs from Macilau’s renowned Faith series, it’s the first time these images will be showcased as a standalone collection in London. They document contemporary animism within Mozambique’s traditional religions, highlighting their cultural and religious significance. Notably, Macilau’s black and white photography captures isolated communities, especially women, practicing their faith amidst challenges posed by climate change.
As a prominent figure in black photography, Macilau explores the spiritual and cultural aspects of animism. His Women of Faith series, part of the exhibition, offers a poignant depiction of women in animist practices. Recently honored with the prestigious Roger Pic Prize for his Faith series, Macilau’s work is celebrated for its artistic and documentary qualities.
Through Macilau’s lens, viewers gain insight into the deep-rooted traditions and spirituality of Mozambique’s culture. This exhibition at Garrett Street gallery provides a compelling portrayal of faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
